Portable Video News

A televisionlike news broadcast would be available online. Clips from newscasts would be available through links on the site. Each user would get links to local, national, and international headlines. In addition, users would be able to customize news viewing with Pandora and Amazon like features, featuring news clips which may appeal to the viewer. These clips could be watched, then opened up to user comments and video and picture uploads. Also, related clips could be used as links in order to link various related stories together. The aim of a site like this would be to make the convenience of morning news more personal and more portable. Users could view the site from trains or subways while commuting on phones of PDAs. Also, using the youtube mentality, users would be encourages to upload more videos, allowing for more user-created news content.

Our group has wrestled with an idea similar to this and after allt these weeks I'm still not sold on it, but haven't given up because I think the concept is there, no one has just found the right way to deliver it (I, too, am clueless). One thing to be careful of is what is already out there ... for one iTunes has news programs that can be downloaded through both the TV shows and podcast sections (ABS, NBC, CBS, FOX Radio, among otheres). Still, it apprears there are only limited shows offered. Being able to access the news on your PDA is what makes your idea stronger than the one in our group, in my opinion. One question: in your idea, you are not receiving the live newscast, correct? By selecting which headlines you want to view, you're going to be watching something on your 9 a.m train that might have appeared on the 7 a.m.news? So it would be used more for less "breaking" news? And are you limiting it only to morning news? Would the user-created uploads/content be only news based and what, if anything, would control what's uploaded? You've definitely got something here, though...

Customized video news sounds cool. Lot's of news aggregators can create a "my news" page for you, but I've yet to see a good, downloadable, customizable newscast. As Andrea commented above, I'm concerned about where your content would come from, and whether you would have the rights to distribute it. Obviously, this is not a concern with user generated video news, but I don't think you can rely solely on that.

I'm kind of back and forth on this idea. It seems like a logical step in the evolution of online news, but I think it takes something away having user-generated video news. There's a certain level of professionalism that hasn't left broadcast news since Murrow. I'm afraid this would turn into a bunch of youtube-esque winey video blogs.

Also, I guess I took that point too far... but the rest of my feed back... I would think it would be difficult to get video from major publications ABC, NBC, etc because they rarely let their content on youtube. I like the idea of creating a news team that only produces news online for podcast download and stuff.

Is this a podcast or a website? A youtube dedicated only to news? If that's the case, I think it would be awesome but difficult to manage. It would be difficult to organize, to feature new news without deleting good old news, and especially to obtain the cooperation of large networks and local news. I think then, if you're counting on users to generate and upload the content, a great deal of reliability would be lost, but maybe that's okay. You would at least get stories that wouldn't be anywhere else than on this newstube- controversial subjects television won't tackle, narrowcasted subjects a broad audience wouldn't care about, and silly things like a report on why Ricky the school bully sucks. It could work.

I can't help but feel like this is already being done thru podcasts and other internet news sites. What makes this different? (maybe i don't get it). Like always, I like that people will be able to get involved and contribute to the news. What if you created a way for it to be on constantly, in the background, so you could watch/listen to the news while playing on the computer just like people do now while being on the computer andhaving the tv on in the back.

This is a useful idea. I recently got cable with OnDemand, and I keep up with HBO series this way instead of actually tuning in when it airs. People could do the same with a news program that they follow or one that is not available in their area. Pursue this one further.

I like this idea. I see it as programmable news tv. I do know that Time Warner cable offers a news-on-demand service, that to me seemed like a very rudimentary version of your idea, and was devoid of the portability of your service. My only concern is that it may be difficult to get cooperation with news services.
